Viking Roasted Barley Malt is produced by roasting good quality malting barley grains. The roasting process is similar to that of Black Malt, with extra care taken to not burn the grain. The final temperature is more than 200°C. The flavor of Roasted Barley is harsh and more bitter than that of black malt. Burnt and smoky flavors are strong.
Roasted barley is used in dark beers like stouts and porters, mainly for its strong coloring ability. Roasted barley will impart a dry flavor and substantial color.
Viking Malt comes from a small town in Finland and has grown to be a big name in the world of malt-making. Over the years, they've joined forces with other malt producers in the Baltic area. Now, they're the top malt company in Northern Europe and one of the biggest in all of Europe. They get their grains from places in North and East Europe where the air is cleaner, which means their malt has a fresh and pure taste.
